Introduction:
As long as I can remember, my imagination has been stirred by Jesus’s prayer in John 17.
“Let them be one as We are one.”
During childhood, I was shocked by the scandal of the church’s division into 45,000 denominations. As a college student, I began to wrestle with the full weight of Jesus’s prayer. How can human beings be one just as the Father is one with the Son? As a young man, the Lord dramatically called me to work for the unity of his church. Now, in middle age, I have been working for a fulfillment of Jesus’s prayer for over twenty years.
As I began to write this book, making the case that “Jesus gets what He prays for,” I was shocked at my own unbelief. I’ve been a champion of Jesus’s prayer for my adult life. And yet, after all that time, my faith for its fulfillment was so small. Wrestling with the prayer of Jesus made it clear—I was a man of little faith. Writing has been an active process of repentance—a turning away from what my eyes see and growing confidence in what the Lord says.
As I’ve come into greater agreement with the heart of Jesus, Scriptural insight into the timing of the full answer to Jesus’s prayer, and even the strategic importance of divisions in the church began to reveal themselves. I have found myself continually marveling at the Father’s plan and Holy Spirit’s abundant power to answer Jesus’s dying request. God, as it turns out, is an excellent strategist. He is committed to answering the prayer of His Son and committed to doing it through His people.
While today we do not see the prayer answered in fullness, I believe we may be living in the generation that will see the perfect answer to this prayer. The result will be a spiritual revolution far more radical than the Protestant Reformation or Pentecostal Renewal. It will be an advancement for humanity much greater than the printing press, or the invention of powered flight. The full answer to Jesus’s prayer in John 17 will change the world with end-of-the-age implications.
No wonder it has not happened yet, because when it does everything will change.
Until that time, we can experience increasingly powerful partial fulfillments every time we gather together with other believers, with the Spirit present among us.
As you read, my prayer is that God brings you through a similar process of repentance, a turning away from old and ragged thinking, and turning to the glorious truth: Jesus is going to get what He prayed for! And some of us reading these words may be alive long enough to welcome the new normal for His people on earth.
